So after our two guests had acclimatised to life on board, we decided to set them a few crewing challenges. First up, a line around the prop how would they react? Would they know what to do..? Their reaction was very telling, they hit the jetty and ran for the hills. Clearly they weren’t ready for this sort of challenge.
Once we had coaxed them back on board, we toned the challenges down with a simple task of winching up the main. They performed fantastically and we never needed to mention the electric winch. This was followed with more winching, we set the main and gib and tacked our way along the coast of Corfu, one on port winch, one on the starboard. Obviously we could have sailed straight to our destination, but where is the fun in that? Again they did brilliantly. Now it’s fair to say we don’t do a lot of tacking on Hector. But why not take advantage of this able crew?!
Another challenge involved anchoring with a long line to shore. We sent them off in the dinghy to secure the line, admittedly it took quite some time, but eventually they secured the line to a smallish rock and rowed back to the boat. To mix it up we got them to swim the next line out. Apart from a close encounter with a crayfish (??? Ask Annette) all went to plan. Another success.
So next up we needed to address their issues with crisis management. While out in the dinghy (so they couldn’t escape), we got another line around the prop. This time they rose to the challenge yelled to stop the motor and dislodged the painter. Bravo!
Our last challenge involved taking the helm and navigating – this was of course the ultimate test, and took more than a bit of courage for all involved. Shallows, wrecks, buoyed channels…Sam nervously hovered through it all, until the time came to take back the helm. We arrived at the entrance to Lefkas canal without incident. We realised how lucky we were to have such able crew, when a charter boat passed us moments later coming out of the canal and hit a rock. A sickening noise, a lurch to the side and the end of someone’s holiday.
So all in all they were naturals and they are already talking about buying a boat and setting sail… who knows.
We're an ordinary family of 5 dreaming, planning and now beginning our adventure around the Mediterranean (and further afield), having an awesome time! Look out for our boat and come and say hi.
