Today we left from Mallorca for Menorca, our next island. I steered the boat for half an hour - it was fun-ish. When we arrived we went swimming to cool off, then we got dressed and went into town after dinner for the Sant Joan Day Festival. Everyone is wearing red t-shirts, carrying bottles of lemon drink and there are flags everywhere. Crowds are streaming into town, there is a real buzz in the air. Something big is going to happen.
At the festival they have horses - more than 100 Menorca bred horses, the riders are known as cavaliers, they are very skilled. Granny would have been impressed.
We watched the opening ceremony where the riders ride around in a circle and loop through the crowd. I thought it was a bit mean as there were millions of people, and they were trying to touch and tease the horses. The horses reared up, and walked in tight circles to escape.
We watched from above, behind a high wall. The police stopped us from going into the main area, people can get trampled. The year before last someone died.
We move and go to the town square to watch it one the big screen with even more crowds, everyone is drinking lemon gin, Mum and Dad try some. We have ice creams instead. We watch the next game, riders with spears have to stab a ring hanging down. The horses charge through the crowd, volunteers keep people back. We see one rider get the ring and the crowd goes crazy. It is a lot of fun.
